Overview¶
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Formulation | Natural rubber latex extract |
| Stock concentration | Standardised occupational allergen extract |
| Reconstituted conc. | N/A (Ready to use) |
| Storage | 2–8°C |
Preparation¶
Before you start
Ensure the extract is specifically for skin testing. Latex testing should only be performed in a facility equipped to treat systemic reactions, as latex is a potent allergen.
Equipment needed¶
- 1 × Standardised Latex extract vial
- 1 mL syringe or dropper (as supplied)
- 25 G needles (for SPT)
Step 1 — Prepare the SPT solution (Neat)¶
- Use the neat extract as provided by the manufacturer.
- Label: "Latex SPT Neat".
Skin prick test (SPT)¶
| Reagent | Concentration |
|---|---|
| Test solution | Neat extract |
| Positive control | Histamine 10 mg/mL |
| Negative control | Normal saline |
Interpretation: Wheal ≥3 mm vs negative control = positive.
Intradermal test (IDT)¶
IDT Contraindicated
Intradermal testing with latex is generally not recommended due to the high risk of systemic anaphylaxis and the high sensitivity of skin prick testing for latex allergy.
Notes¶
- If skin testing is negative but clinical suspicion remains high, consider serum specific IgE (RAST) testing.
- Ensure the "Checklist for Latex-Safe Environment" is followed if the patient is known to be latex-allergic.
